We are pleased to present our April 22, 2020 sale of United States Stamps and Postal History, featuring the collection of Richard Carl. With 740 lots, we have nice sections of Stampless Covers, Free Franks and Autographed letters, Postmasters' Provisionals, an excellent range of imperf. Classics and other 19th Century used and unused, including Fancy Cancels, Civil War Patriotics, Territorial covers, 20th Century with Regular Issues and Commemoratives to $5, Large Die Proofs, Modern Errors and varieties. Back of the book includes Air Post, Postage Dues and more, followed by Confederate States, U.S. Possessions and Large Lots and Collections. 1851 3c red, canceled by pen cross on cover, with "Camp Floyd, UT Jan 14" (1859) dateline alongside, addressed to New York City, fine (on 9 November 1858, amid gun fire and patriotic music, the soldiers of Camp Floyd, Utah Territory, raised the United States flag above their newly completed garrison. Named for Secretary of War, John B. Floyd, the post housed the largest concentration of U.S. troops to that time, in what immediately became the third largest city in Utah. Camp Floyd was a product of the so-called "Utah War." Influenced by rumors of rebellion in Utah, President James Buchanan ordered 2,500 soldiers led by Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston to Utah. After a short stay at the north end of the valley, Johnston moved his men across a creek from present-day Fairfield where soldiers, aided by Mormon laborers and artisans, built Camp Floyd)
