1945 2L on 25c green, Surcharged in red brown variety (instead of black), two copies used in combination with 1L violet (watermarked) on mourning cover sent from Naples to Brooklyn, NY, with Naples (11.8.1945) cds alongside, v.f., signed Sorani, etc., with 2002 Colla certificate. A major Italian rarity, used during Luogotenenza (general lieutenancy in Italy between June 5, 1944 and May 9, 1946. King Victor Emmanuel III, in his proclamation of April 12, 1944, announced his intention to withdraw from public life and to appoint his lieutenant-general son Umberto with effect from the date of the effective entry of the allied troops in Rome). Sassone Catalogue states that there are only two covers known with this variety, one containing a single franking and this unique cover containing two copies (Sass.525A)
