BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIAN STATES - Victoria
1856 (30 Jan) double rated FL to Scotland "Per Hellespont/via Singapore", franked with Woodblock 6d (2), ample margins, one just in at left, both tied by "1" (Melbourne), with London transit on back, also MORE TO PAY hs & ms "8" applied on front, Edinburgh arrival in red (carried per "Hellespont", departed 18 2 1856, via the Indian Ocean & arrived Singapore 16 March; then per P & O "Norna" to Galle; "Bombay" to Suez; & with "Pera", arriving Southampton 4 May 1856. During the Crimean War many P & O ships were pressed into Naval service & mail services became infrequent and more reliant on private shipping. The "Hellespont" was a coastal steamer that was sent to Singapore to be sold. This is a famous voyage, from which little surviving mail is recorded)

1860 entire mercantile FL headed "Melbourne 11th October 1860" with PROST KOHLER & Co/MELBOURNE & SYDNEY cachet at lower left, to Alvarez Esqre/Hong Kong, endorsed "pr Behar via Ceylon" with single Beaded Ovals 6d orange, fine example, tied by Barred Numeral '1' of Melbourne, with Oct. 25, 1860 pmk (First Day of Issue !), Hong Kong arrival (Dec. 11, 60), minor blemishes and taped tear at top, still a Classic Era First Day Cover, one of the most attractive of the very few covers recorded bearing this stamp
