BRITISH COMMONWEALTH CANADIAN TERRITORY - NEWFOUNDLAND Air Post
1919 3c red brown, with manuscript "Aerial Atlantic Mail J.A.R." (J.A.Robinson), used on flown cover, with St. John's April 19, 1919 departure postmark alongside, endorsed "per Rolls Martinsyde Aeroplane Raymor" F.P. Raymor and Capt. Morgan", envelope, with printed "Martinsyde Monoplanes and Biplanes" address, London 7 Jan. 1920 arrival pmk, v.f., signed Herbert Bloch, etc., with Friedl and Diena certificates. In 1919, the London "Daily Mail" offered a £10,000 prize for the first non-stop flight over the Atlantic. The 1st plane, known as the Hawker, was forced down in the ocean about 1,000 miles out. A second plane, the "Martinsyde" Raymor, piloted by Major F.P. Raynham and navigated by Major C.W.F. Morgan, also competed for the Daily Mail's prize. The crew arrived at St. John's on April 10, 1919 and made a valiant effort to assemble their plane in the shortest time possible. They made a test run on April 18, and when it appeared that they would be able to "beat" the Hawker to Europe, as special mail
