Lot #575
GERMAN STATES Thurn & Taxis
1861 (16 Nov) FL from Budingen to Buffalo (addressed to Eben-Ezer Society), franked with 1kr and irregular block of 3x15kr, usual margins, tied by numeral pmks, departure cds alongside, red "Am Service" and New York Paid arrival markings, also French transits, some toning, otherwise fine, interesting destination (the Eben-Ezer Society was a religious group that traced its roots to Hesse in Germany. The movement became popular in the early 19th century as a protest against the Lutheran Church. Also known as the Community of True Inspiration, their members were Germans, Swiss and Austrians from different socio-economic backgrounds. They settled in West Seneca, New York, after purchasing land from an Indian reservation. The religious practices dictated avoidance of military service and refusal to take an oath, which obviously kept them in conflict with German authorities)
