RUSSIA Arctic Exploration
1918 Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian explorer of polar regions. He led the first Antarctic expedition to reach the South Pole between 1910 and 1912. He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. He is also known as the first to traverse the Northwest Passage. Amundsen, along with Douglas Mawson, Robert Falcon Scott, and Ernest Shackleton, was a key expedition leader during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. While initially, he used Fridtjof Nansen's Fram under the South Pole expedition, in 1916 he contracted his own polar "Matilda". It was used for sailing through the Northeast Passage. Amundsen led an expedition from 1918 to 1920. The aim of the expedition was to explore the unknown areas of the Arctic Ocean. The plan was that they were going to sail along the coast of Siberia and go into the ice farther to the north and east than Nansen did.
