 | Lot #1000 RUSSIA Arctic Exploration 1895 Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition, cover (with contents) to West Kensington, with "Franz Josef Land" cachet in violet and franked with the photographic vignette depicting the S.Y. Windward, with "Delivered 26 Oct 1895" manuscript on reverse. The enclosed letter is written by Frederick G. Jackson and addressed to Montague Troup. Only 100 copies of the Windward Vignette were prepared for expedition members and only three (!) are known on cover. A fine piece of Arctic Expedition history (the Jackson–Harmsworth Expedition to Franz Josef Land, 1894-97, was led by British Arctic explorer Frederick George Jackson and financed by newspaper proprietor Alfred Harmsworth. Jackson had been misled by false maps into believing that Franz Joseph Land was a land mass that extended to the North Pole.
