AUTOGRAPHS OF FAMOUS PEOPLE
1858 Davis, Jefferson (1808-1889) American statesman and leader of the Confederacy, serving as President for its entire history. Davis served as the United States Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. Both before and after his time in the Pierce administration, he served as a Democratic U.S. senator representing the state of Mississippi. A small envelope (torn and partly mended at top) signed free frank "JeffersDavis U.S.S." with Washington D.C., Free" postmark alongside, addressed to Thos S. Twiss, agent for Indian Affairs, Port Laramie, Nebraska Territory (USMA Graduate, class of 1826; Twiss, born in New York; appointed from the State of Vermont; Graduated No.2 in his class and was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers; Resigned in 1829 and was a professor from 1829 to 1847; Railroad engineer from 1850-55; Indian agent from 1855-61. Died in Nebraska 18 Jan 1871)
