GERMAN WORLD WAR II OCCUPATION ISSUES Concentration Camp Mail: Salaspils
1944 (15 July) cover franked with 12pf Ostland, with framed "Gepruft" and SD censor cachets, minor faults, with APS cert. Salaspils concentration camp was established at the end of 1941 at a point 18 km southeast of Riga (Latvia). Officially, Salaspils was a "Police Prison and Work Education Camp" (Polizeigegfangnis und Arbeitserziehungslager). It was also known as camp Kurtenhof after the German name for the city of Salaspils. By 1942 Salaspils became comparable to a German concentration camp, claiming at the end thousands of victims
