Lot #507
HAITI
1914 50c claret, overprinted "GL OZ", with boxed "Poste/Paye" control handstamp, bottom sheet margin single, l.h., v.f., signed Herbert Bloch, with 2003 Brian Moorhouse certificate, ex-Judge Montes, Everett Colson, Alfred Lebon, Ferrars Tows collections. This is the rarest stamp from Haiti, with only around 10 used and unused copies recorded. This is the only known marginal example. Brian Moorhouse included a short history of this stamp, originally given by Judge Montes to his fiend Everett Colson sometime in the early 1920s. Mr. Colson, sold the stamp to Alfred Lebon, who in turn sold it to Ferrars H. Tows. It subsequently appeared at the Collector's Club during the sale held by Carl Pelander in February 1949 (lot 1606). At that sale, the stamp realized $390 (against Scott's catalogue value at the time of $400)
