LITHUANIA First Vilnius Issue
1918 10sk black, horizontal pair cancelled by Wilna in straight line Gothic cancel (remnant of the German occupation, whose postal system "Postgebiet Ob Ost" was still entrenched months after the young republic proclaimed its independence on Feb.18) on postal card addressed to Kowno, from Vilnius, dated 27.12.18, the first day of issue of these stamps, written by Dr. Jonas Basanavicius (activist and proponent of Lithuania's National Revival and founder of the first Lithuanian language newspaper Ausra. He was one of the initiators and the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 1905 Congress of Lithuanians, the Great Seimas of Vilnius. He was also the founder and chairman of the Lithuanian Scientific Society. As a member of the Council of Lithuania, he was a signer of the Act of Independence of Lithuania on February 16, 1918.
