(Utah Territory), Jan. 14", addressed to New York, rare usage during the Mormon War (a bloodless but significant conflict between the Mormons and the federal government in 1857–58. In July 1857, President James Buchanan sent a 2,500–member expeditionary to secure the Utah Territory for its new governor, Alfred Cumming, a non-Mormon from Georgia. Buchanan had earlier appointed Cumming to replace Mormon Governor Brigham Young in order to quell complaints that the Mormons were traitors. As the U.S. troops slowly advanced, Young organized the Utah Militia to prepare for a guerrilla war and its presence successfully held the army at bay through the winter.
