Lot #552
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
1864 (15 May) FL franked with Spanish West Indies adhesive 1 rp blue on salmon, tied by "Puerto Plata" cds, with corresponding pmk alongside, addressed to the capitol, Santo Domingo, with oval arrival pmk on back. The Spanish post office in the Dominican Republic (which gained its independence in 1865), began using the stamps of the Spanish West Indies (as used in Cuba, Philippines and Puerto Rico) in 1861. Only one used example of 1rp value of the 1857 (Queen facing right) is known, plus this 1861-64 (and reportedly two others) cover. In prospective, other European Countries' Post Offices used Abroad, while not common, are often found in collections and archives. This usage of a Spanish Colony stamp used from the Post Office Abroad in the Dominican Republic, ranks as a great rarity
