1879 (29 Aug) small mourning cover from Lima to Paris, franked with unoverprinted 2c, 5c and 20c, three different, paying 27c "via Panama", with 8 September Calais a Paris French entry and faint arrival (?) pmk on back, cover carelessly opened, otherwise fine. War between Peru and Chile was declared on April 5th, 1879 and by January 5th, 1880, the value of paper money depreciated significantly against silver, with new, higher rates becoming effective. Covers used prior to devaluation are scarce
