RUSSIA The Monastic Republic of Mount Athos
1916 contemplated issue for the Holy Community situated on Mount Athos. In the winter of 1915-16, the Allies considered the occupation of the Holy Mountain and in anticipation, prepared a set of six stamps intended for issue on the 25th January, for use by the governing body of the Monastic Republic. They were designed by Lt.Cmdr Luke and printed in imperf. sheets of 12, by a photographic process (similar to that used in Mafeking during the Boer War) aboard the H.M.Aircraft Carrier "Ark Royal". On His Majesty's Service cover with seven stamps including 1/2d, 1d, 2 1/2d (two different colors), 4 1/2d, 6d and 1sh, cancelled "Afon" 25.1.1916, with Field Post Office 2 March departure cds alongside, boxed On Active Service Passed Censor cachet and addressed to Salonika, v.f. The 1948 edition of the Robson Lowe Encyclopedia raises two points of interest with these stamps.
