Lot #1358
PERU Peru - Pacific War
1880 cover (roughly opened for display) to Paris, endorsed "via Magallanes", franked with Chile 1877 10c blue, tied by mute cancel, with Lima transit cds (31 Dec) on reverse, circular Peruvian "T" due marking and handstruck "10" (decimes) French arrival rating, also 16 Feb. Calais a Paris cds at left, fine, with Brian Moorehouse cert. The origination of this cover is not known for certain, but the mute cancel is probably the one listed as Type P11 in the Catalogo Especializado Chile 2000 (page A21), which is attributed to Yca, in Peru. While Peru joined the UPU on 1 July, 1878, Chile did not become a member until 1881, hence at the time of this cover, the Chile stamp could not have prepaid the cover to France. The correct UPU rate from Peru to France, on the "via Magellanes" sea route was, nevertheless 10 centavos. The circular "T" was probably applied in Lima, signifying the unacceptability of the Chilean stamp (Lima fell under Chilean occupation only on 17 January, 1881)
