Lot #1237
BRITISH COMMONWEALTH NEWFOUNDLAND Air Post
1919 Hawker, 3c brown, initialed "J.A.R." on reverse (by the Postmaster J.A. Robinson), slightly showing through, well centered, lightly hinged, fresh and v.f. example of this classic airmail rarity, certainly among the finest copies known, with 1968 BPA and 1998 Vincent Greene certs. This stamp derives its name from the pilot, H.G. Hawker who attempted the first non-stop flight over the Atlantic. The plane was forced down about 1,000 miles to sea and the mailbag was salvaged. Of the 200 issued, it is believed that only 87 unused examples can exist, with 76 sold to benefit the Marine Disasters Fund and the remaining eleven distributed as "complimentary" copies (though some may have been used) (SG 142, Unitrade CA$30,000)
