 | Lot #673 MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1875-78 Porte de Mar 1875 Starting January 1st, 1875, under the 5th Contract, the RMSP packets continued along the same routes but no longer stopped at Tampico and Puerto Rico. A FL from Mexico City, 30 June to Madrid, franked with perforated 25c, carried by "Ebro" to St. Thomas and "Nile" to Plymouth (arriving July 29th), then through France and overland to Spain. On reverse, there is 10 centavos Porte De Mar black. The "T" handstamp and manuscript "110" indicate credit to the British per U.PU. Regulations. (The handstamp combining the T and 1-10 did not come into use until 1876). On arrival in Spain, red "MMMM 1Ps30" (1.30p) postage due handstamp was applied, fine and earliest recorded usage of a Porte De Mar adhesive. These stamps were issued to indicate the amount of cash to be paid to captains of the mail steamers taking outgoing foreign mail.  Catalog #JX10 | Price Realized $7,500.00 |
 | Lot #674 MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1875-78 Porte de Mar 1878 With the end of the consular agencies in Mexico, the post office had to deal directly with the shipping lines for the transport of mail. The rate negotiated with Great Britain was 10 centavos for a typical letter (considerably lower than the French rate of 31 centavos). The Porte de Mar stamps were used to satisfy the public's desire for some form of evidence that those fees were paid. A 25c stationery entire envelope, opened for display, used December 1878 from Cosamaloapan to Paris, conveyed by "Ebro" to St. Thomas (January 15) and "Nile" to Plymouth (arriving January 30), with 10c Porte De Mar applied on reverse. In accordance with the new Universal Postal Union rules, "T 1-10" (1.10fr) accountancy mark was applied on front, with 16 decimes due on arrival.
