MEXICO U.S. SHIPS - 1836 "George Washington"
1836 FL from Mexico City to London, forwarded in Veracruz by "Manning, Marshall and Co." (oval handstamp), placed on the ship "George Washington" 4 January 1837 to New York, where it was forwarded by "C.A. and E.H. Eckscher" (manuscript February 3 date). The letter arrived in London on 2nd March, with "Liverpool Ship Letter" box and rated 3sh 2d, fine pre-stamp forwarded item. U.S. ships began handling mail in the Caribbean on a regular basis in 1848, but it was not until April 1853, that a contract was awarded by the government for the conveying of mail directly from Mexican ports. Prior to this, mail was generally placed on U.S. ships by forwarding agents.
