Fine example of mail carried by the Royal Navy. Spanish forces continued to occupy the Fort of San Juan de Ulua which prevented the use of the port of Vera Cruz by non-Spanish vessels. While Mexico achieved independence in September, 1821, the last Spanish troops, holding the fort did not leave until 1825.  | Lot #523 MEXICO SPANISH SHIPS - 1806-1843 1841 FL from Veracruz, August 3 to Havana by a British packet "Penguin", with "Yndias E" handstamp, handled by the "Empresa de Correos Maritimos" at Havana. The circular "Yndias E" marking was used only on correspondence from Mexico. Spain contracted service with the Cuban company, which operated from 1828 to 1851. They had a virtual monopoly on mail through Cuba, but handled little Mexican mail (Mexico had no diplomatic relations with Spain until 1836).
