Lot #754
MEXICO FRENCH SHIPS - 1878 covers
1878 Cover from Veracruz to Bordeaux via the Ligne B steamer "Ville de St. Nazaire" arriving at St. Nazaire on 16th April. France joined the Universal Postal Union on January 1st, 1876. Thereafter, "T" in triangle was applied to letters with non-U.P.U. recognized postage. In addition, manuscript "0" on the bottom of the 25c (1874 Issue) indicates it was (correctly) not recognized and "24" (decimes) due was required. While at that time "Ligne B" continued to make only one passage per month, U.S. ships left daily from New York and "Via New York" became the preferred route. Consequently, post-1875 "Ligne B" covers are uncommon
