 | Lot #541 MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - The Frigate "Lilly" 1809 Prior to 1815, when the Spanish opened their Caribbean ports to foreign vessels, there is but one instance recorded of a British ship touching port in Mexico - the frigate "Lilly" in 1809. Spain was being invaded by Napoleon and allied herself with England. British warships were the sole means of maintaining communication with the Colonies, since the Spanish fleet had been taken over by the French. A FL from Veracruz, 6 November, to Cadiz, Spain, carried by the British frigate "Lilly", endorsed "Frag.ta Inglesa La Lilly", with "Nueva Espana" handstamp (indicating origin) and red "7R"(reales) due marking applied on arrival.
