1861 outer FL Mexico City (March) to Madrid, franked with 2r (single-weight), sent via British Agency at Veracruz ("Paid at Veracruz" crown circle in black, plus manuscript "1/" and British Consulate backstamp), per "Solent" (with Havana March 9 backstamp) to St. Thomas (where it arrived March 14), then to England by the packet "Tasmanian", arriving in London, March 30th, then by packet to Spain, arriving in Madrid April 4th, rated "8Rs" due from recipient, v.f., with appropriate transit and arrival pmks on back, ex-Backal collection

Vera Cruz" (in oval), entering the Mexican mail system 19 January 1862 at Orizava (because the French had occupied Veracruz), where it was franked with 2r black (without overprint), fine forwarded mail letter

MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1861-65
1862 FL from Mexico (August) to New Orleans, franked with 2r black on pink, sent via the British Agency at Veracruz, September 1st. Carried by "Trent" to St. Thomas and "Tasmanian" to Southampton, with London September 29 transit pmk. Transported to New York by the steamer "Hansa" of the North German Line. The Union fleet under Admiral Farragut forced the opening of the Mississippi in April 1862 and the Union army occupied New Orleans on 26th April. During the subsequent months, maritime traffic between New Orleans and Mexico was suspended, therefore the roundabout routing of this cover. The final leg was probably by a military supply ship, with 75 cents due (altered from the original "54", addition 20c to captain), overall toning, fine and interesting cover

MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1861-65
1864 Fourth contract, from January 1864 to January 1875. Stops at Veracruz and Tampico were preceded by stops at St.Thomas, Puerto Rico and Havana (the addition of Puerto Rico being the main difference from the previous contract route). The return from Tampico retraced these stops, then on to Southampton. A FL from Mexico City, 27 February to Havana, franked with 2r black on pink, deposited with the British Consulate with prepayment of 1shilling (manuscript) and conveyed through the British Agency, Veracruz ("Paid at Veracruz" crown circle). The steamer "Conway" carried the letter to Cuba (arriving Havana March 7th) where "3" reales were charged and "INDIAS" handstamp was applied to indicate origin. A rarity to Cuba
