MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1847-56 "Paid at Vera Cruz"
1849 The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company reorganized its main route November 2nd, 1847, so that ships left Southampton to arrive at Havana (after stops at Bermuda and Nassau), then proceed to New Orleans, Cat Island (Bahamas), Veracruz, Tampico, then retraced the route, which remained in operation until August 1850 (Mobile, Alabama replaced Cat Island in 1849). An outer FL with "Paid at Veracruz" crown circle in black, to New York via Mobile (June), charged 1 shilling (manuscript) for British service including conveyance by the Royal Mail Steam Co. "Clyde", U.S. red "Ship 12" (10c for over 300 miles inland plus 2c), with Veracruz departure and "Franquedo" pmks on back, v.f.

1850 On August 2nd, 1850, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company changed its routes, the main line departing Southampton to St.Thomas. The mails to Mexico were now taken via San Juan, Jamaica, Veracruz and Tampico, then retracing its calls. A FL from Belfast Ireland, February 28 to Mexico, 2sh 6d paid with 2x1sh embossed (cut to shape) and 6x1p red stamps (the 3d over the regular rate of 2sh 3d paid the late fee), carried by "Medway" to Bermuda, March 18th, continuing to Veracruz, arriving April 7th, with blue Belfast departure and 2 March, Southampton pmks in red, fine

MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1847-56 "Paid at Vera Cruz"
1853 Starting June 2nd, 1852, the Royal Mail Steam Ship Co. amended its third contract by inserting a stop at Havana prior to St. Thomas. This route remained unchanged for the next eleven years. A FL from Kingston, Jamaica, 10 January to Veracruz, with 1 shilling paid by sender, sent by "La Plata" to St. Thomas (January 14th transit on back) and per "Trent" January 29th via Havana, arriving in Veracruz on February 5th, no internal postage charged. The "Trent" gained fame during the early days of the U.S. Civil War ("The Trent Affair") in 1861, when U.S. Navy boarded the ship to seize representatives of the Confederate government

MEXICO BRITISH SHIPS - 1847-56 "Paid at Vera Cruz"
1856 (October) small cover from Guanajuato to France, with 1 real paying single-weight to Veracruz, per packet "Conway" to St. Thomas, then by "La Plata" (October 3), arriving at Southampton on November 15th. The cover bears French 16 November '56 arrival and boxed "Colonies Art-18" British-French exchange marking in red, which while relatively common during the stampless period (and eventually discontinued by December 31,1856) is the only known example on a stamped cover. A fine, unique item. The first Mexican stamps appeared on 1 August, 1856. Initially, the rate for an ordinary letter was + real, if sent under 16 leagues and 1 real if sent further. On 20 December 1856, these rates were doubled, so the "First Rate Period" lasted only four months. Covers used during that time are relatively scarce

1857 Starting in 1857, the amount due from France for the British Service was based on units of 30 grams, rather than by individual piece. One France & 60c centimes was charged for 30 grams of mail from British Consular Agencies and indicated by the "GB 1F 60c" handstamp, which remained in effect until the creation of U.P.U. in 1875. A FL from Durango to Bordeaux, franked with a horizontal pair of 1r yellow, tied by a boxed August 17 departure datestamp (without year), via the "Solent" departing Tampico, August 30th for Veracruz, Havana, St.Thomas (September 15th), then per "Panama" to Southampton and France, arriving October 2nd with typical "GB 1f 60c" exchange marking, 8 decimes due, with transit and arrival pmks on back, fine
